How many years should you get out of a sofa?

I bought two three seaters around 8 years ago. They cost 1200 and are a tweady fabric.

They look like they need replacing now as cushions losing shape, few holes (that I have darned) and generally looks tired. I have been washing the covers for around 4 years now as had various spillages thanks to little people!

Is this about average life span for a sofa when you have children and pets? We also have a leather one in another room and it hasn't faired any better.

How long is a reasonable amount of time to expect from a sofa?

I expect 4-5y out of a sofa.

We replaced ours last year that we had had since 2008. Seats had gone flat and it reminded me of that installation artwork by Sarah Lucas Grin I think 5y wear and tear with a family and pets is fair enough.

We've got two from JL that have lasted 10 years. One is a sofa bed in our TV room that we sit on all the time. We have another sitting room that is also my home office so the sofa doesn't get sat on much so that one's not really representative. But the TV room is used daily and the sofa is still in pretty good, sittable nick.

I think 8 years is reasonable for that price range. I'd say the more little people you add to the scene the shorter the life span of the sofa!

We've moved alot in the past 15 years and have had to replace 3 times. The one we have now should last longer as it's just me and dh using it, the dc are now teens and only pass through every now and then to say hello or ask for food!

Kids wreck them dont they.

It is like the back seats of cars.

Now I am more child free, my recently bought car is staying looking great!

We've had our 2-seater + 2 chairs for 19 years. Still looks good, though we've put a throw on the sofa as it's a little grubby and won't clean up. I think they were maybe £1800 all those years ago.

2 kids, no pets (well not ones that can climb on the sofa).

Sofa still in reasonable nick 8 years on - by which I mean sittable but not at all beautiful. But it is now just used for watching tv in the family room rather than being the naice sofa in the naice sitting room for when adults want to relax.

Can I just say: never buy a cream sofa, even if child-free at the time. You will regret it the moment the children in your future learn to draw with a green felt tip.
