crying over stains on new carpets........please please help!!!

So I have lovely new carpets in cornish cream (oh so not sensible I hear your cry - yes I now agree but too late........) and my husband was kneeling down doing some painting of the fireplace and his new jeans have bled blue dye onto the new carpet. How can i get it out? Please have a mumsnet trick up your collective sleeve.......

Also in all the rooms black smudges like newsprint have appeared - what can they be? and how do i get rid of them as well.

I very much doubt the dye with come out... you need a good professional carpet cleaner to advise you, or if your insured they will send an assessor out. Where are the black smudges, are they on the edges?

thanks for replying - the black smudges are randomly placed, the main ones being in front of our main bed. Im going to ring the carpet firm tomorrow to see if they can help.

Actually, this happened to me and I managed to sponge the stains out myself, relatively easily. It was on a 100% wool carpet, very pale/off white and, like you, husband knelt on it for a couple of minutes. I think I just used soap powder - no machine or anything. So don't lose hope! Oh, and his jeans dye also rubbed off on the edge of our white quartz worktop so watch out for other marks.

Have you tried Vanish carpet spray? It's in a pink nozzle spray bottle (not aerosol). My husband spilt a glass of port on our cream carpet and it literally disappeared after a couple of squirts of the stuff. Magic.

My DM had black marks on her winter white bedroom carpet, the professional cleaner who removed them said it was from black socks when DF had taken his shoes off. Not sure if that could be your problem?

most modern carpets can be cleaned with bleach!

Second betold, the black marks are from dark socks, when you sit / walk in the carpet the fibres twist into the carpet. My pale carpet was ruined in places from precious owners just sitting and rubbing their socks along it.

I would love cream carpets, but I couldn't bring myself to have to tell visitors to only wear white socks....

and wash the jeans a couple of time at 80o before you let him wear them again!

My DPs jeans did this on our cream sofas - cheaper jeans seems to be the worse, wash to get all the unbonded dye out.

I just washed the sofa covers, which doesnt help I know.

Actually, I think a cold wash will 'seal' the dye in the new jeans rather than a hot one?

Vanish carpet is amazing! I got the stain from a full glass of red wine spilled on cream carpet out with it. Am now a master stain remover.

Blot a liquid spill to remove as much as possible before applying cleaner. Don't rub, work from the outside inwards so as not to spread stain and use a white lint free cloth.

Apply cleaner and leave to work etc. You may need repeat applications.

Clear (uncoloured) washing up liquid eg Ecover is also useful on stains on pale carpets.

mrsbrowns - that is rubbish! Polypropylene carpets are the only ones the manufacturers claim can take bleach. The OP has already stated hers is wool.

Our dog ruined our creamy beige carpet. I did manage the get the marks out but the pile is crushed in one area.

This just happened to me - an hour after my off-white berber wool carpet was laid it had big blue smudges all over it! Jeans had been washed twice and dye was STILL being transferred (dark cheapy F&F from Tesco - be warned!) Anyway, I had the carpet firm back in who could only recommend a professional cleaner, who was very doubtful of being able to get the marks out completely, so instead I tried Vanish Carpet and Upholstery cleaner and it's 90% cleared the marks. No longer noticeable unless you knew where they were. Just spray on and blot with white paper towel. DO NOT RUB as this ruins the surface of a berber carpet. Once dry, just vacuum over the top. Not sure why this helps but it does! I used Vanish to get dog pee off a very fussy friend's WHITE carpet a couple of years ago and she never knew it had been there. The stuff is miraculous.

I would warn against Vanish on a wool carpet. Even after a test patch it left visible pale marks on my pale grey carpet. They seemed to lighten after it was dry.
I now use white vinegar diluted with warm water to remove marks on pale cream carpet ( previous owners choice throughout the house! ) It does seem to work, applied with a well wrung out cloth and dapped in the direction of the grain of the carpet.
