Any tips on how to eradicate smells of unknown origin?

I am moving into a new place and have noticed that there is a distinct 'smell' that is quite noticeable in our hallway. It's not a bad or offensive smell, and doesn't seem mouldy. It's weirdly savoury- the closest thing I can liken it to is almost roast chicken (although I don't think that's what it is!)

Has anyone has any success in ridding their home of a mysterious smell?

I've heard of things like bicarbonate of sofa to eradicate fridge smells- is there any trick or tip like that?

I will be most grateful for any wisdom or advice!

Ps There are other people who live in the floor below us, but I don't think it's a cooking smell as its kind of a constant.

If it's actually stuck in the paintwork you may need to paint to get rid. If not try washing down all the woodwork, so skirting boards and doors with something like flash with febreeze. What flooring is there? If it's carpet, sprinkle with bicarb, brush in, leave a while, then Hoover up.

Thank you Koothra. It's newly painted so I don't think smell stuck in paint. Only one carpet which is on the stairs and is quite old and nasty- we're going to change that. I think you may be right as I don't notice the smell in any other part if the place.
