What symbol indicates whether you can tumble dry? Dd has been given some clothes with japanese care symbols only on them. Ideas, anyone?!

What symbols have you got on the label? Maybe we can have a go at deciphering them

housemum · 18/08/2006 23:57

Have you got any clothes from Next? I noticed that my dd's things have English and Japanese but she's asleep and there's nothing from Next in the washing basket!

I have got a "do not tumble" hat here, and it's not much use as there are 5 English symbols to 4 Japanese ones. The only ones I couldn't match were do-not-dry-clean and do-not-tumble. The only Japanese symbol left was a circle with some squiggles in and a cross through.

Japanese for bleach is the symbol that looks like a chemistry flask on those stencils you used to get at school. The washing temp is a washing machine symbol with a number in, and the iron is an iron.

Maybe they don't use tumble dryers in Japan? Just found a pair of knickers, the only difference between their instructions and the hat is that they can be tumbled and the hat can't, but there is no difference in the Japanese symbols. Play it safe and just hang it up to dry.

The circle, squiggle and line through sounds like do-not-tumble.

Ours is a circle in a square with a line through (isn't it?)

(They were clean knickers by the way! DD's in-case-of-emergency pair from my bag!)

Found some Japanese symbols.

Here . Scroll down the page, takes a little while to load but they are there.

SaintGeorgeMarple · 19/08/2006 00:05

Doh!

Sorry, that was the wrong page. Here

Thanks for your replies everyone

The clothes that I was wondering about are from Next, but the label has just four Japanese care symbols on it. Another item from Next has both Japanese and English care instructions - four Japanese - washing machine with a 40 in it, then a chemical flask with a cross through it, followed by an iron with a little oblong box and a vertical line through it, finally a circle with squiggles and a cross through it! The five English ones are wash tub with the temp, triangle crossed out(= do not bleach), iron with two dots, circle crossed out (=do not dry clean), and box with a circle in it (= can be tumble dried).

Just to give you a laugh - after my quandary about all this, yesterday I tumble dried a mattress protector which had no indicator about tumbling so I assumed it would be okay - and it came out with a melted effect on the underside though hopefully it will still be usable!

Housemum - perhaps it doesn't rain in Japan as much as it does in the UK! LOL
