Turtle mats look good. I'm wondering whether to get a small one that can fit in the washing machine or a long runner type (I've a toddler and wooden floors).

What about outdoor mats? (I'm a recent house buyer after spending my adult life in flats). Are the flat coir mats fine or is it better to get something raised, so rainwater drains away?

Turtle mats are fab . Get as big as you can fit in your machine. I have had mine years and they still look good.

for outdoors, I think a traditional coir mat looks best. But get a really big one, the indoor size look mean IMO.

JL have expensive ones, Wilkos have cheap ones. I think about 1000mm x 600mm

You can hang them over a fence or bin and hose off if really muddy, otherwise hang and beat the dust out, or even hoover. They shed a lot of bristles when new.
