Polishing - what's that all about?

Just noticed in a thread below someone was polishing for the 3rd time this month and it's thrown me in to a bit of a panic. I don't have any polish, what am I supposed to be polishing?
I remember my mum used to keep spray polish as an air freshener to make it seem like she did polishing but what do people polish in this day and age?

PMSL! I found a tin of polish under the sink recently that I must have bought about five years ago! I obv don't polish either. I flirt with a duster occasionally when you can't see the picture on the telly.

Polish is bad for you, all that nasty CO2 or something - what about the ozone layer?!!
