freezer for garage - upright or chest?

I need to get a freezer for the garage. Ideally I don't want a chest freezer as they are a pain in the arse (or back!) to delve into - problem is none of the uprights I've seen say they are ok to use in outbuildings (so I guess uninsurable if I do put it out there).

I've seen chest freezers with 1 small basket, but does anyone know of a chest freezer that has more baskets to make unloading easier OR does anyone know of an upright model that is listed as ok for outbuildings?

it's not so much the insurance, but that they don't work properly if the ambient temperature is too cold.

I've only found them so far with 1 tiny basket in - if I could find one with baskets all along the top then I'd be happy!

Ours is a chest freezer - it's got 6 baskets I think! (Will check later)

It's quite old (at least 6 years) but still working fine touch wood.

Only draw back of a chest freezer is EVERY time you go to get anything out of it, somebody (DP, DSS, DS - I'm looking at you) will have put something massive and heavy on it and you have to shout for assistance

It's a fridgidair (I kid you not) - would love to tell you what model but there's something massive and heavy preventing further access.

Apparently beko use a different refridgerant, and can be used at low temperatures.

I have a small Beko chest freezer in my garage, and keep a pair of gloves next to it.
I possibly shouldn't admit that I have a spreadsheet detailing what is in the freezer and update anytime I take something out, or put things in!

LELoupee - that's exactly what I do to the freezer in the kitchen, so I have a feeling I'll be doing it with the new one as well!

I'll check out Beko and Fridgidair and see what I can come up with.

I have a Bekco freezer( upright) in the garage and it is one that states can be used in colder temps. It has been fab. Will try and find the model and report back

I have an upright Beko (wanted a chest, because of larger capacity, but the upright takes up less floor space, obviously). The write-up specs state that this is suitable for an outbuilding. Have had it for over two years, and it survived our hot summer weather (it's in the shed, which can get very hot)! It was the not-being-able-to-cope-with-the-heat bit that I was more worried about, as we had a Siemens in the kitchen years ago, and it always played up in the summer.

I have a Beko upright in the garage too.

LELoupee - oh, I so wish I could be as organised. We have a large American-style f/f in the house, and whenever I look for something (which I KNOW is in one of the freezers) it just takes me ages finding it, running from house to shed, freezer contents flying about all over the place, me cursing I bloody know it's here somewhere You get the picture . . . . .

This is really good feedback - I'd never have considered Beko as they get really bad press but I think I'm being sold on them now.

I also used to have a beko in the garage., it worked fine there.

Another vote for a Beko upright. Really happy with ours and it is in the garage too.

Just got a regular Siemens upright in the garage, it's an integrated garage we live in the south east so it never gets that cold we have had no trouble with it in 3 years.

I have a chest freezer with only the one basket. Keep it organized by having fairly rigid tote bags in it. One for meat, another for fish, one for vege and another for poultry. Different colours to identify at a glance. I thought the tote bags may crack from being frozen but after more than a year later they're as good as new. Very easy to pull out just what I want.
Chest freezers are supposed to be cheaper to run but I don't know if there's much difference.

We were left a huge and probably rather old chest freezer with this house. For a while I stuck with my old small upright, then braved the chest freezer. I monitor our electricity use and there's no difference.

it's brilliant and with frozen bread and milk shopping frequency is really reduced.

Another person here witha beko upright in the garage. Unlike a pp I don't have a spreadsheet, so on occasion have a pleasant surprise when me or one of the dcs check out what we have!
