How often do you clean mattress protectors

Do you have them? How often do you wash them?

I stayed with a friend in December and was surprised none of their beds had mattress protectors just a sheet between them and the mattress which I think is quite gross.

I wash ours regularly (almost weekly for the children) is this normal and is it worth spending a bit on them - DH thinks John Lewis basic ones are fine but I only like natural fibres...

Is this a joke?

I dont even wash the sheet weekly and do the protectors every couple of sheet changes. No, we dont spend a fortune on them and got the kids waterproof ones primarily to stop wee/puke getting through to the mattress

but if they've been weed/puked on surely they need a wash too?

I was wondering this recently!

We don't wee or puke in our beds in our house, so they only get washed about every 8-10 washes I guess. Is that truly gross?

of course I wash them if they have been peed and puked on!! I bought them in the past when the kids were younger and more prone to wetting/being ill. Now they are on as a general protector so if there have been no mishaps then they dont need washing so often.

errr - I wash them in the event of a puking (quite frequent in our house), otherwise not. I don't think of them as something I need to wash on a similar frequency to sheets - they are only there to protect your mattress in the event of XYZ and if XZY doesn't happen, I don't wash them. Any more than people used to attempt to wash their mattress before mattress protectors came along (they seem to me to be a quite recent thing - not something we had at home in the 70s I don't think??)

I have washed the one on our bed once. I don't wash the sheets weekly. I'm not going to wash the mattress protector more often.

I've washed the one on DD's bed four times - maybe five?

Why on earth would you wash it more frequently?

I wash them fortnightly at 60 degrees more because of the need to eliminate dust mites/bed bugs rather than because they are dirty

My kids are great at bed-wetting/puking and excessive drooling.

I'm just wAiting for the one who washes them daily. I do it every 2-3 months when I can dry outside.

Change the one on our bed once a month and the one on DS every other week due to excess teething drool.

I wash mine every time I wash the sheets (usually weekly). I think this may be excessive

Sheets are changed weekly, matress protector every 2 or 3 mths. If we have a few really hot nights then I wash them more often. I can get them dry easily as I live in a hot country so can get washing out even in winter.

I probably wash the one on our bed once a year - in the summer when it's nice and warm and it dries quickly outside but maybe not every single year

Kids perhaps more regularly as they do have the odd wet bed. The youngest has the type you can wipe down though so sometimes do that.

Don't see why you'd need to do it any more frequently tbh (unless you have allergies or something, of course)

Every other bed change so once every 2-3weeks.
Maybe be a bit excessive but dont feel like i have a clean bed otherwise

I wash ours everytime I do the bed sheet.So weekly.
The kids ones less.But I always grab them when doing the sheets.
I always forget the pillow ones.
We have alot of alergies so bedding being washed alot really helps.

ours gets washed weekly with the sheets. I can't understand people NOT washing it with the rest of the bedding tbh.

Due to the totally crap weather they haven't been washed for about 2/3 months. I have the ikea ones that stop spills. Mine and dh is a quilted one and that gets a good airing ( european style) regulary and then taken to the cleaners. Forecast is fab for next week so the whole lot will be washed and I might even do the curtains as well!!!!!

I've got a couple of the cheap ones for our bed which get washed about once a month with the pillow protectors, Sheets are washed every 1-2 weeks

I wash mine weekly. I didn't know you weren't supposed to!!! I strip the bed weekly and put it all in the wash.

The thing is, you only have to look at a pillow that hasn't had a protector on to see that the pillowcase does not stop grease/dribble/sweat etc getting through. I'm assuming a sheet offers just as little protection so I do think the mattress and pillow protectors need regular washing to keep them fresh and in turn actually protect the mattress and pillows.

Only about twice a year, when weather allows. I do the secondary pillowcases MUCH more often (maybe monthly) due to penetration of head grease (barf). But I'm pretty sure I wash the bedclothes more often than most people I know (weekly), which I see as a rather extravagant luxury, and i doubt that most of my peers double pillowcases at all. I think my beds are quite clean enough!
