Sewing machine for basic tasks?

Hi there, can anyone recommend a decent sewing machine for basic tasks such as taking up hems, basic school costumes, kiddie crafts etc? I used to do a bit of sewing as a teenager, but am otherwise a beginner. I don't need all singing all dancing, but would like something reliable.

Any thoughts comrades?

I bought a John Lewis own-brand one for £99 and it's great. I'm a beginner and find it easy to use. It's this one.

Hi cake, can you do trouser hems on that one? Looks good.

Yep. Or at least I'm pretty sure you can - I always use that sticky iron-on stuff to do trouser hems, which I suppose is a bit lazy now I've bought a sewing machine!
