insecticide works - spray in plenty (like, an entire can if you really hate maggots) - put lid down and wait a couple of hours.

thanks geekgirl, would i buy it from a garden centre?

anywhere really. Garden centre, household aisle in the supermarket... just some kind of flying insect killing spray. good luck!

wait until it's empty then just put tons of boiling water and a little disinfectant in it, then tip it up and leave it to air !

My Dad ( a farmer) always used Jeyes Fluid to kill maggots.

melrose · 08/08/2006 09:44

any other ideas, just put the rubbish out and now feel sick!

perhaps i should scoop them into an envelope and mail to nobody in particular

Melrose - hope i never get on the wrong side of you but so funny. Almost wet myself!

maggs77 · 08/08/2006 20:37

Melrose you need to double bag your waste eg. food and then put it in the bin and keep the bin lid closed so no flys can get in and lay eggs. Maggots need mosture to breed on.

I get my bin cleaned regularly by a local bin cleaner, I think about once a month. Have to pay for it. Bin men come and empty the bins and then he follows behind them. Makes a huge difference.

muma3 · 08/08/2006 20:51

i have this as my bins dont get collected til every fortnight . thinks its disgusting in this weather !!!

LIZS · 08/08/2006 20:54

I know ours is revolting too . Last week after it was "emptied" I rinsed with neat bleach adn boiling water. A bit naughty but seems to have been effective.

LIZS · 09/08/2006 15:16

..except that they are back with avengeance and the birds are enjoying the feast as they emerge from the top of the wheelie bin - bleurgh.
