I've had the dishwasher for 8 years and have never used salt separately as I thought it was only used in hard water areas and the tablets have some salt in them..but should I be using it anyway to maybe prolong the life of the dishwasher and get the dishes cleaner?

I do use it as the salt in the tablets dont activate the water softener in the machine. I'm sure that on my machine you can set it for the water hardness in your area so it doesnt use the salt up too quickly. I use cheap own brand dishwasher salt.

I dont use seperate salt either (also soft water). I dont think we need to.

check what your machine manual says as it may advise to use salt.

Dishwasher fixer man told me it's like fabric softener in your washing machine; you don't need to use it, but you'll get even better results if you do use it. It's so cheap anyway.

Thanks for the replies, I'll probably not start if it's not really needed.

it does improve the function of the dishwasher and you dont need to top up with salt very often either and the salt is cheap.
