Cleaning water dispenser in fridge

We are getting a new fridge with a non plumbed water dispenser and I wanted to check how people maintain theirs and keep them clean. Do we need to change the water daily as I don't think we will drink 4.5l every day? How do I make sure it stays clean and doesn't get limescale/mould?

When I looked into this, I found that there are concerns that it is very difficult to keep them clean, so we opted for a fridge without a dispenser, despite knowing we would use it a lot(we do when staying in relatives houses), we were considering plumbed in ones.

I have the narrow slim fit brittas water filters jug, they are easy to clean and work well. use less space than the unit takes away from the internal space in the fridge.

As a building contractor, I have found that as we replace kitchen, clients always want a fridge without dispenser after having one with, so I suspect they are always a hassle.

I drove Hubby mad insisting on one with one of these. Never use it as it's a nightmare to clean - sorry

Oh dear well I mostly bought it for other features but was hoping the water dispenser wouldn't be completely useless!

I've never had one, but do the instructions say it is not dishwasher safe, and do they say what to do?

maybe washing out with Milton occasionally would keep it free of mould and algae, or possibly a denture tablet. It would need to be well rinsed for the taste. If it is chilled and dark, any growth will be very slow.

I wash ours out every so often with washing up liquid and hot water. Seems to work ok and not get mouldy.
