anyone got a "quirky" freestanding/retro kitchen?

Odd question I know...
My kitchen needs ripping out.
Cupboards have had it, plumbing knackered etc.
I would love a freestanding kitchen and I do like some of the ikea units but I would also like it to have a quirky/retro feel to it iyswim?
Been trawling sites like e bay and have found a gorgeous refurb 1930s larder cupboard. I love it and it's the same price as an ikea unit!!
Any tips?
What not to do?
Ideas?
Thanks!

A friend of mine has the freestanding IKEA units. She has white, pine and red units. The red units are 3 in a block and then 2 white units on the wall and everything else pine. It sounds odd but looks really good. She had the floor and wall tiles done in black, which makes the quirkyness stand out. She does have a very big kitchen though, not sure how it work in my 9ft x 6ft one!!

My DH wants an old fashioned free standing kitchen but we are a bit unsure on how to do it.

I have one, I love it. Much more storage than a new kitchen
