Argument with my DH this morning over heating!!!

I am sick and tired of my husband watching the heating like a hawk. I am careful with money but I think what he sets it to is ridiculous. He has it on at 6.10am and off at 6.50am we don't go out til 7.30 on a Mon-Weds and the house is cold when I come downstairs. He then has it set to 4.30 til... 5.30!!!! That's it! I turn the heating on when I want but if he's in he'll make a comment or turn it off without saying anything.
Love him to bits but I mentioned I was cold this morning and we ended up having a heated row about it. Interested to see what other people think and what you have your heating on?

16 degrees is cold though! Mine goes to 18/19 degrees but isn't on all the time, just in the morning and evening for a few hours

using a programmable stat, ours is automatically set to 16C overnight and while we're out, and about 20C for daytime "at home" hours.

Except in bitterly cold weather, it rarely gets down to 16C overnight indoors, good insulation makes the heat loss from the house very slow, so it is as economical as if it was turned off.

16C is rather cool, but not "cold"

It is set to 12C during holidays, 24x7, to guard against frost, and also in summer, as it has a holiday setting of up to 99 days, which is easier than turning it off but has the same effect and keeps the programming in place.

Haha laughed when I read this ..my dh is the same , it's our winter annual argument.
If gas fire is on ...no heating allowed
If heating is on ...no gas fire allowed!!Confused
He is so lovely in every other way....Envy and I know he is just trying to keep the bills down ...but sometimes it can be annoying.

I set the timer for what I think is reasonable ...
Couple hours in morning
About 3-4 hours in eve turning it to low towards bed time ...
He will override the timer and switch it off early!! AngryConfused

Ours is on 6 -7.30 in the morning before work set at 18c, It then comes on at 16.30, set at 19c, I get in about 16.45. It goes off at 22.30. I couldn't sit there cold at night.

If I am at home in the day in the week, my work hours vary a bit, I don't have it on unless its really cold, say below 15/16c in the house if I'm doing stuff.

Its on all day at weekends though if we are in, set at 18/19c

Um, I am sorry who the hell is he talking to!? Your house and you have a right to be warm. Tell him to wind his neck in. It is a joint house, joint bills I'd imagine.

Ours comes on at 6.25 and goes off at 7.50. We leave at 8.30. It comes back on at 4 pm and goes off around 7.30. The house holds its heat quite well and once DS is in bed we generally stick a blanket over our legs if we are cold!

happy2bhomely · 25/01/2014 19:20

Ours is set to 20 and is on 10am until 10 pm, if I'm home. If I go out I turn it down to 15 and turn it up as soon as I get in. I like coming home to a warm house.

We spend about £20-£25 a week on a prepayment meter. We have loft and wall insulation. We have double glazing.

jellybeanlover · 26/01/2014 11:13

Ours is on from 5am to 9pm, work from home some days, but get up at 5.30, we work hard, and like our comfort! Pay about £90 a month, 4 bed detached, no double glazing.

bakingaddict · 26/01/2014 11:22

Set at 25C for 2 hours in the morning and about 2hrs in the evening.

If it's cold I put it to constant or if it's mild then i'll turn it off. We have good double glazing and the house can get very warm quite quickly.

It's not right that one person is uncomfortable because of the cold in their own home. I'd consider it a form of torture if my DH did this

spottymoo · 26/01/2014 13:21

In the morning it's on from 6.30-9.00 set on 25

In the evening it's on from 4.30 till 7.30/8.30 again set at 25

Sometimes in the day I'll pop it on for an hour

Have the fire on as and when required through out the the day and the evening.

3 bed semi
We pay £80 a month gas through out autumn & winter and that goes down to £40 in spring & summer

I don't do being cold.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 27/01/2014 09:48

I can never believe how many people let their partner dictate something so fundamental as warmth!! You shouldn't have to ask permission to have the heating on in your own house! Do you have to ask before flushing the toilet or having a drink of water?
Our heating comes on about 6am and stays on all day till 10.30 pm. Thermostat set to 19. I turn it down if I go out.
I can't get over how many people ration heat.

Clutterbugsmum · 27/01/2014 10:53

I know Inspace. Ours is set at 18/20c if it needs to be on then it comes on.

I refuse to be cold for anyone.

I'm sure its been reported that it is more economical to have your heating on low/constant rather then twice a day.
