Smelly washing machine!

My parents washing machine stinks! Smells gone off almost. All the clothes come out smelly mouldy and neither of them will do anything about it (apart from my mum leaves it open to 'air') any suggestions?

You can buy washing machine cleaner from Tesco. I use it after I washed the dogs beds & towels!

I suspect it's mostly bicarb of soda or some such but it does freshen up the drum.

I leave mine open all the time. I thought that was normal?

ThisTimeItsPersonal · 19/01/2014 17:12

Thank you I'll look for some.
It's normal to leave it open but she thinks it'll get rid of the smell

Wipe around under the seal after use incase water is lying there and make a routine of putting some cheap soda crystals in the drum and running the machine on a 95degree wash without any laundry in it.

Running on empty on the hottest wash possible is a good routine to get into every 4-6 weeks.

Thank you, i will try to do that for her! Smile

Run on a 90 degree wash with powder (not liquid) and then after every wash leave the door and the soap compartment open. Stops any smells.

We had this. It was caused by using the liquid and tabs rather than washing powder. We switched to buying powder again and the smell went away. We now use switch between both and have had no problems since.

take out the dispenser drawer and clean it. Clean the bit the drawer fits into - it will probably be black with mould - I find an old toothbrush and bleach spray help to clean the roof area. Find where the filter is and also clean that out. Clean around the rubber seal and the door. Run a hot wash with vinegar or soda crystals. Use powder instead of liquid as powders contain bleach and liquids dont - the bleach helps to keep the drum clean
