Using a topsheet under your duvet, to cut down on washing???

Do you do it? For all family members? Does it cut down on washing? Never heard of it until recently.

We do as it is easier to wash and change a sheet every week or two than a duvet cover. Duvet cover doesn't need washing very often then.

That's what used to be done in the days of "continental quilts" with those fixed flash-all-night nylon covers. Keeping it all straight (and the sheet folded over the duvet so your face/ear/armpit doesn't make it dirty) is too much like hard work and you don't seem to get the same benefit of the duvet with a sheet in the way.

I'd rather just wash a duvet cover.

I do it, but mostly cos I like layers! Every little helps inthe winter and in the summer I can't sleep without covers, so the sheet covers my modesty. and stops the goblins under the bed from seeing my bum

And for the best reason of all....the ILs don't get it. Once when they visited one of them got in under the duvet AND the sheet and the other only under the duvet...there was a very amusing scene at breakfast where one accused the other of getting IN the duvet cover and being ridiculous.

...I still laugh about it every time I make a bed up for them.

I have started using a top sheet in the last 6 months, it definitely makes a difference in keeping the duvet fresh. I still change all the bedlinen in one go...sheets and duvet cover all go in the wash at the same time. It also helps the bed feel a little bit more luxurious when you get in under a nice crisp cotton sheet at the end of a long day. I only have it on our bed, dc just have the duvet with the cover.

We have enjoyed the benefit of a top sheet for many years. It reduces the need to wash the duvet cover each week, keeps us a bit warmer in the winter and we can throw off the duvet in summer when needed.

I started doing this to the spare bed (family only) since I discovered that the rather expensive duvet cover matching that room ^needs ironing, so glad to hear others are using a sheet.
Loved Catsmamma's post - reminded me of when DH and I found ourselves in different layers of a continental friend's spare bed.

I use a topsheet under the duvet cover as we have a six foot duvet and when I have to wrestle with it, when washing or ironing it, it wins!Smile
I used to just use a duvet cover but the top sheet trick is so much easier. I don't bother doing it with the single duvets. I can beat them no probsSmile

We do this because DP's mum always did it apparently and I quite like it. Change the sheet every few days and the duvet cover every couple of weeks. It's only one bed though, I wouldn't do it if I had a family.

Quite handy when it's a bit warmer but not warm enough for just a sheet, as well. Push the duvet back about half way.
