confusing tumble dryer labelling on clothes?

Some clothes that are 100% cotton (and with no weird trims) have the no tumble dryer label on them. Others say one or two dots I.e. tumble dry cool or medium. Which is right? I tumble dry all my 100% cotton towels and bedding with no problem. What's the issue with clothes. I seem to have more clothes drying on racks than I expected to have with a tumble dryer..?

Sometimes it can be because tumble drying can cause colours to fade. I tumble dry practically everything. (obvs not knits, silk and jeans) Seems fine.

Oh, I didn't think about colours fading. Ta!

I have found some cotton clothes shrink in the tumble drier. Also clothes decorated with pictures on often cannot be tumbled, presumably the paint would crack or melt.

When my current drier dies I plan on researching heat pump driers in the hope that they are kinder to clothes.
