Bluebottle invasion - eeeyuk! - ADVICE needed

Over the past three months we've had an influx of blue bottle flies. It is totally disgusting. In the past when this has happened we've always found /smelt a dead mouse rotting under an inaccessible floor board. This time we can't smell anything but we've still got the flies. Any advice?

IS the only solution a deep clean of the whole house?? (Groan - it's a big house….)

oh marking place on this one for the past couple of weeks we've had just 1 big blue bottle appear every other evening.
I wondered if they were still about outside and needing a cold snap to see them off?

we always kill them when they appear.

Am now wondering if I should see if something has been missed, cannot for the life of me think where though Sad

I think sometimes that things like this can be in hibernation iyswim, and sort of wake up again when you put your heating on.

I often find a wasp or two in the room when it's early spring or summer - well before they appear outside, and because our windows don't open, they can't have got in any other way really.

Very disconcerting to hear buzzing like that.

Also watching with interest. I loathe the dirty little bleeders.

I have done more investigating in our house. With all the doors shut I have narrowed it down to one room, which has an external air vent, I'm wondering if something is in there or near it, we had another single fly appear in the lounge tonight.

Very strange is only ever 1, killed it, they are really slow and dopey which makes me think they are cold /old, will investigate the vent in the daylight and evict or spray copious amounts of Raid in there!

I think it's the mild winter we have had so far - flies and insects are still around a bit, not having been killed by the cold or gone properly into hibernation. I had a huge sleepy bluebottle in the house the other day, and a mosquito. A mosquito - in January in the high Yorkshire Pennines! Grin

Nice to hear we're not alone in experiencing this problem. I'm envious of those of you with one or two flies - on average I think we're killing @ 20 a day and this is on the decrease.Hmm It was gross at it's height. We've had vermin in the attic (rat poison has been eaten up) but there's no smell anywhere of rotting creature. That's the mystery. I think also like you all that it's partly due to the mild winter.

As for disposing of them: we have an old fashioned fly swatter (v good), my slippers (v good), fly spray (effective but I always feel as if I'm about to keel over) and sticky fly paper (gross when you see all these corpses stuck to the paper.

Anyone else got any suggestions?
