Fabric oil and grease removers

I've tried various spot stain removers including ones that claim to remove oil and grease but nothing seems to work for me. A table cloth I use for special occasions is covered in grease/oil smudges even after washing and most of our cotton or wool tops will inevitably end up with a few rogue spots. Does anyone have any tried and tested methods/products they can recommend? Thanks!

Have you tried fairy liquid. No idea if its any good on fabric but its brilliant at oil removal. X

I use fairy liquid if any stains get on clothes just squirt a tiny bit on rub in and then wash as normal

I hadn't thought of Fairy, but I guess if it's good for degreasing washing up, it should work on fabric too. I'll give it a go. Thanks!

Rub White chalk (kids chalks work fine) on the stain and it soaks up the grease. Then wash as normal.

I've used WD40 on clothing a handful of times to remove grease. Spray it on, wash the garment (the stain will often spread this first time round) then wash it again normally.

This has been on two cotton tops and a pair of hillwalking trousers (not sure what they're made of). I've not tried it on wool.
