How do you keep on top of laundry?

Here's a question for parents of young kids. I am trying to mend my slovenly ways - no scratch that- it ain't for want of trying - but I can never seem to keep on top of our huge laundry pile. Please, please take me through your routine and give me your tips. We have no tumble drier and everything takes forever to dry in winter. How do some people manage to keep their homes completely clear of washing? We seem to always have sheets hanging on the backs of doors etc, a huge pile waiting to be put away and no room on the racks cos everything is damp. Help!

Every night I put a wash on.
In the morning I hang it up on this rack that can hold two loads even with clothes spread over two rails IYSWIM - so that clothing is not touching other clothing. The rack has a smallish footprint and lives on my landing. It is up for most of the year!
Stuff usually dries in 24-48 hours and as soon as I take the dry stuff down I hang wet stuff up. It's relentless in the sense that I spend 30 mins every single day on laundry but that's the nature of laundry isn't it? The basket is never fully empty because the whites or darks will be saved up till there's a full load.
I have a basket inside a cupboard for the ironing pile so it's out of sight and I do one big ironing session a week.

There are four of us, I should have said. Two adults, two primary age children.
