Needing a steam cleaner/mop thingy

Could anyone recommend one please?

There is a Shark one reduced to 100 in the Curry's sale which the salesman's mum likes apparently (!!) but I've not heard of the brand.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Yes Winklewoman, it would.

I love my Karcher so much I want to marry it. I got it for Xmas and have only had a few days playing with it because we went away for new year, but my shower now looks like new and my kitchen is gleaming. My cleaner had a go yesterday and is now planning to try to persuade all the other people she works for to get one because she's so pleased with how good a job it did on the tiled kitchen floor (and how little effort it was and how quickly it dried).

TunipTheUnconquerable · 07/01/2014 19:30

Re the mop head cover, I cut up an old towel to the right size so I now have 8 more. With the Karcher it's just a cloth which clamps over the mop head. For the handheld attachment I'd have to buy more because it only came with one and they're elasticated, but I don't seem to be using that much at the moment (probably because I'm mostly still using the brush to get ancient grime up).

We've done one carpet so far - steaming it brings the dirt up and then you hoover it afterwards, so it's more trouble than a Rug Doctor but a similar level of cleaning without having to hire it or use chemicals.

agedknees · 07/01/2014 19:37

I have the shark. I love it. It saved my lounge carpet at Christmas (looks pointedly at dh and the Doritos dip jar).

winklewoman · 07/01/2014 21:26

Thanks, Tunip, I had a look at the Karcher and it certainly sounds excellent, but I fancied the sort that is on a sort of stick, as opposed to one which is like a small cylinder vacuum. Do Karcher do that sort? I could not see one.
WeeLady I share your pain about Tesco having run out of the cheap one and B&M no longer have the Prolex. I'd have been happy to gamble £24 on either as an experiment, though I have concluded that I probably need one with a brush attachment to sort out the grubby grouting.
However, I feel very virtuous and home-maker-ish just discussing these domestic items, thanks folks.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 07/01/2014 21:29

The Karcher ones are just cylinders. I also know several people with the Morphy Richards 9-in-1 which is the upright type, and they love theirs and are steaming everything in sight as well. Smile

alemci · 07/01/2014 21:48

a relative gave me the beldray one lastnyear. it was good but suddenly packed up. I did try using vinegar to see if it was scaled up but it just doesn't heat up properly.

may buy vax one from John Lewis with 2 year guarantee

Weelady77 · 07/01/2014 21:59

Winklewoman asda have got a couple of cheaper ones with good reviews too and they have the abode for £25 they also have another with better reviews for £20Smile

winklewoman · 07/01/2014 22:36

Weelady, that is so kind - unfortunately we are nowhere near an Asda, and no time to make a special expedition as we are going away for a week at the weekend. With any luck they will still be around when we get back.

winklewoman · 07/01/2014 22:59

I have just discovered Asda deliver. Any thoughts on the £25 adobe versus the £20 Holme anyone?

Ilovewaleswhenitrains · 08/01/2014 19:28

I bought the black & decker (recommended by MN) 2-in-1. It was £149 originally, reduced in Argos to £99. It is a stick type, with 3 different floor types. It has a hand held detachable unit, with a hose and different brush attachments - bathroom, toilet, a blade thingy for glass and kitchen.
I have only used the floor cleaning & carpet option so far and I'm happy with both.

fedup21 · 08/01/2014 19:35

Was it this Abode one?

www.amazon.co.uk/Abode-Detergent-Steam-1500-Black/dp/B009ABPMIA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1389209570&sr=8-2&keywords=abode+steam+mop

I really want a steam mop. I want one with no 'one star' reviews saying that they are really rubbish and leak!

Weelady77 · 08/01/2014 19:40

Don't think it was that one although looks the same I'm sure it was 900 watt

alemci · 08/01/2014 20:13

liked the way it had a 3 year guarantee. not sure, a lot of them start off working well it seems then go wrong.

Raeray · 08/01/2014 20:22

Ooh I really want one too! I also like the thought of one that can steam clothes - I hate ironing my work uniforms and thought this might be a good idea!
So... One that can be used on Lino, tiles, carpets and clothes!

What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance Grin

hedwiggywiggerson · 08/01/2014 20:26

Hi is the 900 watt I got although it's white not black this is the link for Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00CMNN9FQ.

I've used it a couple of times now, no leaking. The instructions do say to ensure the dial is turned to off when not in use otherwise it will leak.

winklewoman · 08/01/2014 22:54

direct.asda.com/Abode-ASM2001---steam-cleaner---stick/001576237,default
This is the £25 asda one, except the link doesn't actually take you to the mop itself until you click on "expand".

Weelady77 · 09/01/2014 10:41

Did you order the abode one winkle??

winklewoman · 09/01/2014 13:28

Hi Weelady, no I'm waiting until we get back from our ski trip to ensure safe delivery. Our cleaner was rather excited at the prospect.

Weelady77 · 09/01/2014 22:04

I've just bought the b&m one Grin i decided I couldn't wait to try it so I done the kitchen and it dried instantly but the cloth fell off a couple of times!!
And I've done the bathroom I don't know if it was because DS was just out the shower and floor had wet bits but it didn't dry as quick as kitchen!!
But all in all it's worth £25Smile
Can't wait to try on carpets

winklewoman · 09/01/2014 22:50

Is that the b&M Prolex one, Weelady?

unlucky83 · 10/01/2014 01:09

I've got the abode one - had it for nearly a year - a bit flimsy (the head has fallen off twice after getting caught on something, fixed it rather than the hassle of returning) but I love it
I got it from Asda for about £18! I bought spare heads as well and the whole lot delivered cost me about £25
I love the fact the floor dries quickly ...so no worries about DCs slipping etc - I can run over it when they are around...and I used to have to dry the floor after wet mopping (also to stop streaks) but no more..
I wanted a cheap one - looking at Which reviews the expensive ones made more steam so cleaned better - but left floors wetter ...and I wanted the dry floors bit! Also I suspected one of the big multipurpose cylinder ones I would never be bothered to get out...and things like H2O / 5 in 1 types seem to get mixed reviews - one of them is a which best buy but either for the hand held bit or the floor (can't remember) - not both - and the other gets a pretty rubbish review!!

IME steam cleaners won't clean a really grotty carpet - you need a carpet washer for that - but it will remove the odd spot/lift pile/freshen up
(I already had a steam wall paper stripper that came with cleaning attachments - so I knew about cleaning with steam -but that wasn't pressurised and didn't have an on/off switch - had to flip it at the wall)
I also bought a cheap (£15ish) handheld one steamer from Lidl (seen similar ones on Amazon for around the same price) ...which is good for hard to reach places like around the cushion bits on a loo seat - or down the sink overflow ...also I find it speeds up defrosting the freezer too...(I suspect mine might be faulty cause the steam isn't very controllable though) - anyway Aldi are selling one soon - for the sameish price and that looks a bit better - so might be worth a try...
I will say steam cleaners on things like really baked in dirty ovens are rubbish! Don't believe the QVC demos...on light grease they are good though...

Weelady77 · 10/01/2014 07:21

Yeah winkle Smile

winklewoman · 10/01/2014 07:40

Right, when we get back it will be full steam ahead.

LIZS · 15/01/2014 15:17

Just bought a Morphy Richards 9 in 1 Any tips to get most out of it ? Been trying it out with some success but not getting excited yet ! Do you mop wood with the grain ?
