New fire - electric or gas?

I am looking at having a fire installed - I think, for various reasons, I can't have a wood burner which leaves me with gas or electric. I have central heating so this is a back up and something to look nice but which is best? I don't have a chimney but gas fire could go on outside wall.

Which is more economical? EFfective? I'm not convinced electric fires look as 'real' as gas ones.

You can get some gorgeous fires now a days, really depends on what your looking for either traditional or modern? Heat wise i would say gas is better it's more instant than electricity

I want something traditional but you can get both gas & electric so I was wondering which was better. Gas makes sense for instant heat. I know nothing about this. Thank you.
