How long do you spend each day doing housework?

Apparently the national average is 1 hour and 52 minutes. This takes into account everybody whatever their situation (for instance the national average time spent on childcare is 25 mins a day because this takes into account people with no children/grown up children).
This seems an awful lot to me. I do spend quite a bit of time doing housework each day, but this is more damage control (wiping up spaghetti etc.) than cleaning the oven. Even the people on my favourite programme, Cleanaholics claim to only spend about 2 hours a day during the week, and 5 hours at weekends. So, if the survey takes into account people who do no housework, somebody must be doing housework for about 14 hours a day - is it you?

My aim is to do an hour aday but i'm a messy bugger. lol.

mrsflowerpot · 20/07/2006 09:56

it's my MIL I think...

I do easily that and more though if you include things like washing, sorting clothes, moving piles of paper from one room to another etc rather than just 'cleaning' like dusting etc.

Bozza · 20/07/2006 09:56

But who does NO housework? Surely 99.9% of people do some housework 0- even if it is only washing up once a week when they run out of pots. Will have a look at the link and then come back - not sure what counts as housework.

NomDePlume · 20/07/2006 09:56

No, it isn't me. I prob do 30 - 40 mins a day on average 'hardcore' cleaning, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms etc. I'd prob add another hour on to that with incidentals like loading/emptying the dishwasher, clearing up after tea (2 lots of as DD has hers earlier than everyone else), washing school uniforms etc.

TambaIsHotHotHot · 20/07/2006 09:56

I do an hour between half 10 and half 11 usually, and then I run the vac round again and wash-up at about 11pm. thats it.

MissChief · 20/07/2006 09:58

seriously, you hoover at 11 in the evening?! Don't know whether to be impressed or not!
i only hoover baout 1x a week - not proud of the fact but can't be faffed/don't have time to do it any more often.

Bozza · 20/07/2006 10:04

Right well if it includes washing/cooking/cleaning/ironing then I spend more than that I would think, although less on the days that I am working, but hugely bumped up on the days I am not working! What does it include? The article was fairly vague.

Bozza · 20/07/2006 10:05

Does it include cooking or not?

KBear · 20/07/2006 10:05

You're supposed to do it every day? THAT's where I'm going wrong.....

Bozza · 20/07/2006 10:07

lol kbear. Yesterday I did about 5 mins but that was because I did a full days work and then tea/bath/bed with the kids and a horrendous headache.

NomDePlume · 20/07/2006 10:08

Oh blimey, with cooking and ironing, I def do well over 1hr 52mins.

themoon66 · 20/07/2006 10:12

Some days I do none at all, other days I do a couple of hours. Spread out over a week I suppose it adds up to about half an hour a day.

ComeOVeneer · 20/07/2006 10:18

ATM I hoover daily, wash floors daily, clean bathrooms x3 weekly, dust a couple of times a week. Then in addition do the usual daily chores of dishwasher, washing, ironing, general tidying and chaos control.

This probably amounts to a couple of hours a day.

Not my usual routine but with 2 kids trapsing sand in from the sand pit outside 2 black and white cats and a typical slovenly husband plus a house on the market you can see why.

housemum · 20/07/2006 11:17

...not long enough because I just came up to get cleaning stuff from airing cupboard and just thought I'd see who was chatting... ...

Whizzz · 20/07/2006 11:28

I should be spending all day today ! As we are having a party on Sat & I need to tidy the WHOLE HOUSE...aarrrggghhhh

If you see me on here again - kick me up the bum

iamapieceofcheesecake · 20/07/2006 11:30

Apparently not long enough....
