My dishwasher is leaving my glasses all icky! Help!

My dishwasher isn't doing a great job with glassware.

Either it leaves a rainbow-coloured sheen on the glasses, or a white film. Either way, they do not look clean.

I clean the machine regularly (every month) with Saino's dishwasher cleaner. I've tried adding rinse aid and even salt (though I live in an area where the manufacturer advises that I don't really need this).

I use top notch dishwasher tabs (Fairy Platinum).

Help!

Clean out the filters and also check that the spray arms aren't blocked (often fruit pips will block the holes and it won't spin).

Some machines have an adjustment for how much rinse aid is used. Might be worth playing with that setting.

Good luck!

My experience is that you need salt and rinse aid no matter where you live.

But you could try using white vinegar instead of rinse aid, this might clear the film. And perhaps try a cheap tablet? You never know ;)

Also, do you rinse plates and cutlery before you load them in the dishwasher? Modern dishwashers need something to work with ;)

I've seen it but never been bothered. Naice glasses get washed by hand, dishwasher glasses don;t stay smart for long

once damaged, they say you can't restore them

If you use liquid gel soap instead of powder the glasses do last much longer.

GideonKipper · 04/12/2013 17:17

I agree with Piglet John. I just wash glasses by hand. We don't use that many on a day to day basis anyway.

I don't use rinse aid or salt & have nice shiny glasses (I'm in E Lancs, water is quite soft) Used to use Ecover tabs, now Almat from Aldi. No probs at all.

Also only ever use Bosch's 30-min quick wash (which dries with residual heat I believe, dunno if that makes any difference)

Thank you so much for the advice! The filter is clean, but I haven't checked the spray arm, so will do this. I'll also try the white vinegar trick.

I really, really cannot be arsed to wash glasses by hand. I'd rather buy cheapo ones from Ikea! /lazy

It's not a bother when you use about two a day! The dc are more likely to have a drink out of their mugs.

I have wine at the weekend but not enough to make washing the glass a chore.
