Foolproof knife sharpening!

Can anyone recommend a foolproof way to sharpen knives?

If I use a steel it just seem to blunt the knife, perhaps I'm not doing it properly.

Have tried the three wheel thing from Ikea, which is useless. Can't see how I could get that wrong, it just doesn't seem to work.

well as it happens i'm about to sit down and do mine with the whetstone. im just waiting for it to finish soaking.

ive had the sharpening steels and the 3 wheel things and they are sooooooo shite compared to the results of the whetstone, they really mess the blade up.

I take mine to the cobbler to sharpen them all.

I use one of these. Excellent results every time and it has lasted for years.

I use something like this

Diamond lap, sold for sharpening lathe tools etc. Very cheap and very easy.

DH has a proper Japanese wet stone, but the above is far quicker and easier unless you need to put a totally new edge on something.
