Heat Your Room For Eight Pence A day!!!

Feeling chilly and don't want to turn up the heat? Here's a cheap and easy alternative to heating a small room - tealights and flowerpots.

By positioning two flowerpots over four tealight candles in a bread baking dish, you can heat a small room or office. The gap between the two pots enables a flow of air that then passes warm air around the room.

We have friends who have tried this method and it works well.

CAUTION!

Be aware that the baking dish and pots will become VERY HOT! DO NOT TOUCH THEM whilst the candle is alight.

NEVER leave a naked flame unattended. Blow it out before you leave the room.

FREE!

SAVE MONEY, SAVE ENERGY, SAVE THE PLANET

Thanks a rather neat idea.

Just don't forget to blow the candles out before you leave!

madmomma · 11/11/2013 09:07

How ingenious! I think this should go in credit crunch too

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 11/11/2013 09:17

That's a really smart idea, I think I'll invest in a few flower pots now! I think I would be nervous doing it whilst my DS (2 years) is around as he literally pokes and prods everything, but at night this could save us lots of money. Thank you OP. :)

AndTwoBits · 11/11/2013 15:51

That is cool! Anyone know the size of the pots used?

PigletJohn · 12/11/2013 13:01

FFS

How much heat do you think there is in a one-ounce candle?

Answer: about as much as in one ounce of heating oil, or a small piece of coal.

If you think that will keep a room warm for a day you are barmy.

Pootles2010 · 12/11/2013 13:04

Yeah thats bonkers, it won't work. Even it did, say tealights are a penny each, you need 4 at a time, and they do not burn for half a day!

This will just result in lots of seriously skint people buying terracotta pots that end up going to waste.

PattyPuddy · 12/11/2013 13:06

I've never heard Piglet John swearing before Shock

sonlypuppyfat · 12/11/2013 13:10

Grumpy Piglet everyone was excited then.

SnakeyMcBadass · 12/11/2013 13:22

I can't see this working. I don't think physics will like it.

maudpringle · 12/11/2013 14:53

Awww, I thought this would help in my freezing utility area Sad

Flibbertyjibbet · 12/11/2013 15:08

I think its more a case that it will take a chill off a room - it might make a bit of difference to me working from home in the kitchen, rather than putting the whole house heating on... but it won' t be the same as a standard radiator.

The way the convection works it will send warm air out the top constantly. The man did say he uses it to heat his boat - well a boat is hardly massive inside is it? Think small rooms and not 'tropical' heat and it would be ok.

StainlessSteelCat · 12/11/2013 15:10

Best laugh I've had all week, thank you Grin

Anyone else remember having to turn off their heating when they lit candles? No? Not just me then.

PigletJohn · 12/11/2013 17:08

an ounce of paraffin, or of wax, will create more than an ounce of water vapour, so it will contribute to dampness in the room.

That bloke in the vid was wearing a lot of jumpers...

Pigletjohn you are normally so level headed,!,, so sensible maybe there is another side of you

specialsubject · 14/12/2013 22:28

Piglet John only gets sweary when stupid pseudo-science is bandied around. As do I, so look away now.

Is it fuckwit night? We've had several utterly boneheaded threads tonight. Lots of people must have wasted their education.

Weelady77 · 14/12/2013 23:00

I agree if it was that simple everyone would be doing it lolGrin

Notcontent · 22/12/2013 16:20

That's why everyone needs to do science at school - especially physics...
