I made my own grout cleaner yesterday, and it was THE BEST THING EVER!

I may be a little late to the 'bicarbonate of soda' worshipping party, judging by pinterest, but after using a whole bottle of some expensive and toxic grout cleaner from Homebase, and nothing happening to the mould on the grout in the shower, I googled for ideas yesterday.

One was to mix bicarb with bleach in a 3:1 ratio, then smear it onto the grout, leave overnight, and then rinse off, so I gave it a go, and WOW! it looks brand new!

So, aside from the fact that I need to get a life, what other homemade and/or awesome cleaning products can people recommend?

That sounds perfect for our mouldy grout! What is the exact recipe? Is it three cups of bicarb. powder to a cup of bleach?

I've spent a small fortune on cleaning our grout and it never looks good.

Oooh that's brilliant. Will try that. I love clean grouting

The recipe on pintetrest was for 3/4 cup bicarb and 1/4 cup bleach - I just did it by eye, and mixed it in an old jam jar. Maybe made 3/4 cup in total, and have 1/3 of it left.

Oh, and I applied it with an old toothbrush, which may or may not be why it cleaned so well, forgot to mention that bit!

Wear old clothes too...

ooh! thank you. i'm going try this as my grout is awful!!

madmomma · 08/11/2013 19:08

I use the domestos spray bleach, or any thick bleach, and it makes it bright white. I don't get what the bicarb adds to the party (but I am in no way diminishing your superb success with this miracle paste) Grin

just bleach didn't work for us - kept sliding off! hence buying stupid expensive cleaner from Homebase!

Labootin · 08/11/2013 19:32

That's not to say I won't try it !

mrsnw · 08/11/2013 20:36

Did it fizz or bubble? How safe is it to do at home?? Grin

Try using just bleach, works a treat, no need for the bicarbonate as well

Bluecarrot · 09/11/2013 00:06

Mr muscle thick gel toilet bleach got my grouting and silicone sealant looking as good as new. ( left overnight)

Generally bicarbonate is mostly used as an abrasive unless being used with vinegar ( where they produce a chemical reaction) but in this case its prob just making the bleach thicker so it doesn't run off as quick.

BatPenguin · 09/11/2013 00:12

I will have to try this on my kitchen floor.
I use bicarbonate with white vingear in my kettle - gets all the limescale out in satisfying chunks Grin

Kickarsequeen · 09/11/2013 00:15

I just removed mango from white cotton using bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid, vinegar and really hot water! I am ecstatic! It us completely and utterly gone! GrinGrinGrin

I'm going to try your grout mix this weekend! Sound great! Grin

see, bleach alone has never worked for us - I think the bicarb is mostly about making it into a paste, but also a wee bit about its abrasive properties. Either way, our bathroom is GLEAMING, and DH even noticed that it was clean, which suggests it was pretty effective ;)

marking place as bleach alone doesn't work for us either.

Saminthemiddle · 09/11/2013 16:27

Thanks for this OP, I am going to try it.

MrsLoveBucket · 09/11/2013 16:30

Lakeland do a grout cleaning spray. Honestly it is amazing! I've tried loads of stuff before and after leaving this on I just wiped and the grout was blooming bright white. Have been very sad and raving about it ever since.
