The egg white was there for about ten minutes before I noticed and wiped it up - but it had left a mark slightly darker. Is there anything I can now do to remove it, or is it stained for good? Really cross with myself.

Very Lightly sand and re-oil and it should be fine

Test a bit of nail varnish remover with a cotton bud on a hidden piece of worktop. If it doesn't seem to wreck the finish, very lightly dab egg white stain to remove it, then re-oil that area. But as I said, make sure you test this approach first before attacking the wood in a visible area.

Thanks both, I will try the nail varnish remover thing in good daylight - if not that then it's back to the sanding. Cheers. Smile

A bit of Cif might be another option.

Leave it, then set down a hot pan in two different places, get water all round the sink and finish off with a generous sprinkling of tomato pasta sauce.
No? Just my worktops then...sigh.
