has anyone bought runners from a shop for their stairs

I did, I brought two runners from QS and it cost me about £17, used my mum's nail gun to attach it.

Its looked great (doesn't now that the kids have pulled them up a bit) but It is going to be removed soon anyway.

my last house was about 300 for the stairs and landing (but not the hall as that was florrboards)

I only want a cheap carpet as my kids are so messy, so £300 is about the figure I was thinking too, we only want the stairs and landing done, as DH is laying a floor in the living room and hallway.
