Stinky carpet!

I'm renting. I think the previous tenant had a cat as the downstairs carpets small like wee but only up close (when I am crawling around after stray Lego in case you think I sound batshit). I am considering getting them professionally cleaned as I am a bit precious about odours.

So my questions are; is there a cheaper way of de stinking it? Does professional cleaning even get rid of the smell?

Tia

We had professional carpet cleaning and it actual MADE the carpet smell. The best thing ive found its just some good old neutradol shake and vac style powdet.have you tried that vanish carpey cleaner that you shake powder on and leave for twenty minutes and hoover off?damn sight cheaper than the fifty quid i paid to make my carpet stink like a wet dog.

Limited - see that was the mn style sensible response I was after. I will purchase the neutradol tomorrow. Thank you Grin

Read here for more info to get the pet stains away.

Its not pet stains, its a smell.
Yrah i spent loadsa money buying allsorts to get the smell the professional had left out,i tried all sorts but in.the end that did the trick.

I was thinking bicarbonate of soda sprinkled, left for a few hours, or a day if you can then hoovered off, but think earlier suggestion of neutradol sounds superior. assuming you dont still have cats I am not sure this is necessary but I believe spraying on surgical spirit stops cats being able to smell where they have weed!

Hamwidgeandcheps · 29/10/2013 09:50

I don't have cats or any pets. I think I will buy the bicarbonate and the Neautradol then I'm at work all day tomorrow so I will fling it around when I leave Grin

Hamwidgeandcheps · 29/10/2013 11:09

does the carpet feel damp? Is it near a radiator?

Hamwidgeandcheps · 29/10/2013 20:56

Nope it's on front on my sofa in the living room and in the under stairs cupboard where the cat tray must have been. I found the odour destroyer spray and some shake and vac I will try that first

Oooh i got ordour destroyer powder dunno of such spray?

BoffinMum · 01/11/2013 09:13

I had a naughty tenant with a secret cat once, and despite doing all the things other people have suggested here, the smell was still there three years later. We ended up recarpeting.

Hamwidgeandcheps · 01/11/2013 20:12

I sprayed the carpet with the neutradol. Bloody hell it really works! I can't smell anything now just the neutradol scent.
Thanks everyone!

I dunno how long the effect will last but the spray was cheap and I didn't use v much. Result!
