Cleaning tarnished silver jewellery

Matildathecat · 27/10/2013 11:35

I've unearthed a rather nice silver necklace which I haven't worn for donkey's years. I've used Silvo which has brought off a lot of black tarnish but it's impossible to get into all the links.

Any suggestions, please?

Foil in a plastic tub. Soda crystals. Very hot water. Put silver in. Tarnish transfers to the foil. Quick, brilliant and easy. Thanks to Kim and Aggie.

Put tin foil on the bottom of a basin/bowl. Boil kettle. Put necklace on foil. Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda in a little hot water. Put bicarb mix in bowl and add enough hot water from kettle to cover necklace. Leave for 5-10 mins and turn the necklace over so the other side is in contact with the foil, then leave for 10 mins more, then dry with a soft dry cloth. Most of the tarnish will be on the foil, and some will come off on the cloth.

It's magic - except actually it's science!

Haha, got distracted mid way through typing and someone beat me to it! Bicarb works just as well as soda crystals, use whichever you have in the house.

Didn't know you could use bicarbonate as well. Smile

Thanks, will try this and report back.

Or pop to Robert Dyas and buy a jar of Silver Dip.

Second Silver Dip. Very easy, just remember to tie some thread to it so you can pull it out easily.

I use toothpaste and an old toothbrush...gets into all the nooks and crannies, and is very quick.

Leaves your hands minty fresh too! Wink
