How to go about replacing doors downstairs

I would like to replace the two doors we have downstairs, one to the toilet and one to the living room. I have no clue how to go about this. Can I just buy the doors in homebase etc, are they easy to fit ourselves and do they come with handle on or do we have to fit that?
Are doors pretty much a standard size?

I need to convince my dh that this is a good idea and will smarten up our downstairs a little but he is not very diy inclined so need to know if it's something he would feel comfortable doing.

Hanging doors is a bit of a dark art - it takes skill to get it perfect. We got a guy in to do ours.
