Yes, it's cos you've used wetter, unseasoned wood - that increases it.

Get newspaper, scrunch it, wet it - dip it in the ashes at the bottom of the pan - 'clean' the glass with it.

Should be sparkly. You can also then use a little bit of warm water and any cleaning spray.

But the newspaper/ashes combo should do the trick Smile

I use glass cleaner on mine, works fine HTH

I agree with LaurieFairyCake, use the ashes to clean the glass. Had a wood burner for 13 years and we used cream cleaner or used the ashes with wetted newspaper or a cloth.

Have you got an airwash control? If so, open that up a bit - this 'washes' the glass.

specialsubject · 19/10/2013 13:59

seconded - read the instructions and use the airwash. That said, you will still get some staining.

best thing is a worn sponge scrubber that has been used for washing up. Don't use a new one. Wet it, dip in the ash and use it to clean the glass. Then polish with one piece of damp kitchen towel which you chuck in the grate after use.

no need for sprays or cleaners of any sort. And nothing rougher as will scratch the glass.

Lakeland do a HG glass cleaner for stoves, brilliant!

Ashes and newspaper works a treat.

didireallysaythat · 19/10/2013 19:23

I use wire wool - tear off a couple of cm and scrub the glass without wetting anything (I made a mess).

Trixybixy · 19/10/2013 20:15

LaurieFairyCake your advice worked a treat.Cleaned it perfectlySmile.Mucho thanksoThanksThanksThanks.
It feels like the newspaper will scratch it when you start rubbing the glass but amazingly it doesnt.Halloween Confused.

Also I recommend you see if you can get a better supply of wood. Until we found a supplier of 'seasoned hardwood' our wood burner used to get dirty glass, and the was a slight smoky smell in the house. Now we rarely need to clean the glass, and when we do, a wipe with an e cloth is enough.

Yankeecandlequeen · 17/11/2013 19:38

babywipes will do the job perfectly
