Will that Vanish stuff you shake on sort out a smelly carpet?

My lounge carpet is very old and the previous homeowners had cats who must have weed everywhere. We can't afford to replace it at the moment. I've tried shampooing the carpet with a domestic carpet washer, but the smell comes back especially when it's a damp day. Well, it's pretty bad all the time at the moment. Has anyone used the Vanish shake stuff? If it got rid of the smell for a couple of weeks that would be something. I have also tried febreeze to no effect. Thanks in advance!

I didn't find the Vanish stuff very effective,band very expensive. I had a carpet that smelled of racoon droppings! After a search on here, someone suggested shaking bio washing powder over a smelly rug. I did that using a sieve. Leave overnight, then Hoover. It really worked and got rid of the lingering smell.

Raccoon droppings! There's a story behind that no doubt!
