How to get rid of damp smell in livingroom

hi, just wondering if anyone had any miracle cures for a damp smell in the living room.
I am very house proud, Hoover at least once a day usually 3 behind all furniture twice a week and keep ontop of dusting. anyway there is a damp smell in the living room that I can't get rid of, I keep airing the room out and it's ok at first then comes back. No one else has mentioned it apart from dp who agreed he could smell it a bit but said it was probably because I had just done a load of ironing.
Any ideas what it could be coming from and how I can get rid of it? It's not an awful smell the room just doesn't smell clean and fresh iykwim.

Check in your living room where there's an outside wall. Is your tv in a corner, check where there's any cabling coming from outdoors. Curtains nice and fresh? Chimney place? Wet washing on radiator? When you're in the room open the window(s) and door, get a through draught.

Smile no wet washing, curtains or chimney breast/fireplace.
checked behind tv cabinet no signs of damp, house was re plastered two years ago after
external wall was rebuilt.
I cleaned the carpets last week but didn't make a difference Sad

Have you got a carpeted floor? Try examining around where the radiator pipe runs for smells, maybe a pipe has cracked or join degraded, leaky radiator?

Is it worse when the heating is on?

Icanonlytry · 05/10/2013 16:27

yes it's carpeted but the carpet doesn't smell. radiator is only 2yrs old, no damp patches on floor, it smells better when heating is in because I wipe it with a cloth with essential oil on it.
It's.not a strong offensive smell I just know it's there.
don't like plug in air fresheners or anything like that so can't even mask it.

Do you have any plants? Sometimes the water can linger in the pots and smell pretty bad.

Try sprinkling bicarbonate of soda all over the carpet at night and then hoover in the morning. I know you said the carpet doesn't smell, but musty smells are normally trapped in carpets (where else?). You can get big packs of bicarb from good DIY shops, they cost £1-2.

Also try leaving a cereal bowl of vinegar in the room, maybe a few, it soaks up smells.

Do you air out 1-2 a day? 10 min with all windows open minimum.

I have old dogs, so at times the whole house smells! So I had to find some ways of getting of the smells and not just mask it. The above works well for me.
