What can I use to polish copper?

I have a lovely copper case which I am very fond of but it's quite tarnished, black spots on it now. I've tried furniture polish, soapy water etc but it doesn't help. Im scared to damage it if I use brasso or similar - can anyone help with advice please?

impregnated cotton wadding polish will bring it up like gold. It used to be branded duraglit but is now badged Brasso. Polish off the black with an old cotton vest. Wear gloves. Close the lid tightly to prevent it drying out. A piece the size of an ice cube is twice as much as you need. Put newspaper down.

Generations of soldiers used it on their buttons and medals.

It is not fundamentally abrasive like liquid brasso.
