Every night, kitchen, hall and conservatory gets overrun with slugs- massive ones too [shudder].
Tonight dd was crying upstairs so I ran up to her, came back down and found I had trodden on a slug, luckily wearing slippers, and it had spread everywhere. Said slug was bravely soldiering on, with a squished bottom

Closer inspection revealed no fewer than 6 slugs dotted about. Where are they coming from? How are they getting in and how can I get rid of them? Only have this problem in the summer, and am getting sick of it now. dd is crawling (well, shuffling) and I don't want slug trails everywhere. I know salt kills them, but I want to prevent them getting in, or returning, or getting their mates round ffs.
Off to bed, not before binning new slug-covered slippers
Someone take pity on me pleeasee!
S.O.S. (sod off slugs)

Leave a high sided glass with beer in it downstairs and let them drown themselves in it or salt. Cruel but necessary if you ask me. They always follow the same trail so I suggest you Google as to how the get rid of the trail. I would find out where they're coming in and put the beer there. Upturned grapefruit is also good for attracting them. IMO you must have whole in wall, by downpipe maybe where their getting in. Hope this helps a bit. Really feel for you as I detest slugs too.

I thought I was the only one with this problem! I hate the bastards! Will try the suggestions here. Copper thing sounds good. Have tried everything else but these are really tough slugs - they crawl over gravel to get in! And if we put powder etc down they just crawl over the dead bodies!

Beginning to develop a phobia now and have nightmares about them getting upstairs!

foxinsocks · 28/06/2006 10:15

I have trodden on a few in bare feet and it is a nightmare - their squidgy bits get stuck between your toes

I have yet to rid our house completely - I think some live outside and come in (so look for holes like aerial holes, pipe holes, under the doors) but we definitely have some that live in the house (probably behind skirting boards, under the flooring etc.). The upturned grapefruit is a good one but if you live in an area which has loads of slugs outside, they will probably keep coming in till you plug all the holes (you can get foam spray to do this or wire wool).

incidentally, friends at the end of our street had their kitchen redone and found massive of slugs living behind their dishwasher - one was the thickness of a thumb and the length of a hand

foxinsocks · 28/06/2006 10:16

masses I should have said though they were massive!

threelittlebabies · 28/06/2006 21:55

Thanks for all the tips, am liking the copper foil idea. Told dh I want to stop them coming in though, rather than just clear the bodies away

The one I thought I had killed was nowhere to be seen this am, it was obviously a hard one and had dragged itself away....

Salt

Put salt down where you think they're coming in or as a barrier into your house.

Or just directly on them (ick)

UCM · 28/06/2006 22:54

When you put salt on them, orange vomity stuff comes out, it's gross.

Beauregard · 28/06/2006 22:56

Is that you ucm?

threelittlebabies · 28/06/2006 23:51

Will salt actually stop them coming in? I hope so, foul creatures. Daren't look in my kitchen just now..... actually just did, there are none, maybe they got the message when I squished their friend!

SO right about the salt UCM, it makes me heave to see it when they burst.
