Getting grout white again.

Is there a way to get the grout in my kitchen and bathroom white again? We've just moved into a new rented house and some of it is nearly black! I've tried Ciff and bleach.

have you tried some mould remover on it before bleaching it?

Bonkerz · 24/09/2013 08:24

Cilit bang bleach spray! It's amazing!!!!!!!!!

reggiebean · 24/09/2013 08:27

Domestos has grout bleach that is extra thick, so it will sit on the grout rather than running down the wall. I swore by that stuff in my last house. As a last resort, mold spray and grout paint!

Reggie, how did you apply it to the grout? Toothbrush?

ilovepowerhoop · 24/09/2013 08:32

dettol mould and mildew. Spray it on and leave for a few hours to work before rinsing

bootsycollins · 24/09/2013 08:33

Amen to the Dettol Mould and mildew spray, spray it on and leave for 15 mins then have a good scrub. I love that old fashioned Vim scouring powder too.

reggiebean · 24/09/2013 08:43

No, it comes in a bottle with a very fine nozzle so you can just squeeze it out and apply it directly to the grout.

purrpurr · 24/09/2013 08:58

Oh I'm going shopping today, I'm all excited now. Two walls of our bathroom are gross.

purrpurr · 24/09/2013 08:59

God I just read that back. Excited about the possibility of white grout. Cripes.

whatsaduckdo · 24/09/2013 08:59

Apparently steam cleaners work wonders on blasting the grouting clean. Going to give it a go on my manky tiles!

purrpurr · 24/09/2013 09:08

I used a steam cleaner yesterday :( all I got for my trouble was frizzy hair.

NanooCov · 24/09/2013 09:09

The only thing I've found that works in black mould is HG mould remover spray from Lakeland (sure you can get it elsewhere but that's where I get it). It stinks and is fairly pricey but does the job well. I wouldn't bother with a steam cleaner - I didn't find them effective.

A bleach which has sodium hypochlorite as one of the active ingredients (read the label).it must contain sodium hypochlorite or it wont work. Tesco own brand thick bleach (must be specifically the thick one - not the daisy brand). Either apply neat or put in a spray bottle diluted with just enough water so it can be sprayed and it is brilliant. Leave it on for a few hours or overnight. Infinitely cheaper than a dedicated grout cleaner. Our bathroom has no window or heater and it was BLACK, now it's gleaming.

A vote for dettol mould and mildew here - although I may try some of the other ideas next time it needs doing!

I also heard Milton type sterilising solution works well - certainly it smells same as the Dettol but not actually tried it personally.

CandyLoo · 24/09/2013 09:45

Will these work on black areas of damp spots on walls d'you think?

Bunbaker · 24/09/2013 09:50

"Will these work on black areas of damp spots on walls d'you think?"

Yes. MIL has problems with a painted brick wall in an outhouse going black with mould. The Dettol mould and mildew remover works like magic.

ilovepowerhoop · 24/09/2013 09:51

I used dettol stuff on a mould patch on ds's bedroom ceiling and it worked. I sprayed it on a cloth and dabbed it on

CandyLoo · 24/09/2013 13:28

Will give it a go, thank you

Daddypigsgusset · 24/09/2013 13:32

I've just bought some parozone bleach plus with stain remover. It contains sodium hypochlorite that somebody mentioned above. I've put it on the grout will report back later. It was 99p from quality save

Daddypigsgusset · 24/09/2013 13:40

Well that was quick. I put it on about half an hour ago. Just wet it with the shower and scrubbed with a nail brush and it's gleaming. Although it wasn't Black, more a mid Brown but can see it being just as good on worse if left longer. well recommended for a squid!

adagio · 28/09/2013 07:32

ooo thanks for reporting back - that is way cheaper than the Dettol one!

kelda · 28/09/2013 07:35

The grouting in my bathroom was badly stained with limescale. I tried the bleach etc, which got the tiles clean, but were too strong for the grouting and the grouting started to disintrigrate in the small area where I tried it.

I cleaned it all thoroughly and then used grout paint.

I had to practise first, I am not much of an artist, but the end result was very good and I have gleaming white tiles and grouting again.
