What cleans the soleplates on irons?

Does anyone know please? Mine's got mucky because I ironed a t-shirt transfer accidentally. There's other stuff built up on it too.

I know you can buy something, but is there anything else I can use? Scourer and jif isn't really working.

I use green scratchy scouring pad with lots of vigour, but it's an enamelled one so not sure that'd work on metal.
Lakeland sell some stuff that might do the trick.

Thank you for the link MrsB - think I'll try to get some of that.

rub some soap onto it (not lather) and warm slightly, then scrape off with the back of a knife.

those funny magic cleaning rubber thingies seem to work.

Sorry to be so technical.

jampots · 26/06/2006 00:05

yes soap works well although not as good on these new fangled steam irons

Sometimes if you iron the 'rough' side of a clean tea towel whilst the iron is still hot it'll work.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - especially the 'funny magic cleaning rubber thingies' - I'll look out for one of those
