I have been reading about this. Do you just out a cup load in the fabric softener bit of the drawer? It says to add for the final rinse but I don't know when the final rinse is on my machine!

The final rinse is what takes in the softener, so just put it where the softener goes and it will be fine

I put it in the main drawer with nothing else and do a boil wash about once a month. Usually for towels which have sorted to smell a but musty! Completely revitalises them.
