Buy some dishwasher cleaner and use it on the hottest cycle.

I just bought a 2pack of dishwasher cleaner liquid from Aldi for £2. Just put the bottle in the cutlery tray and run on a hot wash. Perfect.
I have seen people recommending soda crystals and vinegar solutions but have gone straight for the cleaner here as I came across that before I had sourced the other bits recommended.
Not sure about the washing machine, will watch and wait for some advice on that next.

how often do you clean the dishwasher filter? (there may be three - read the instructions)

Best to leave the door open a crack to air it when out of use, as it will be damp inside.

Washing machine - filter; door; but also give it a hot hot hot service wash with no powder or fabsoft, and a cup of soda crystals if you have them. Old cotton towels will stand up to the heat so bung them in. If the water goes grey and foamy that is the old soap sludge dissolving, so do it again until it stays clear. You may need to scrub out the drawer and its slot with kitchen spray with bleach if there is sludge and mildew. Putting the powder staright in the drum usually prevents this. Leave the drawer open a crack between uses to dry.

Vinegar would remove limescale, but if you keep the salt vessel topped up there shouldn't be any

Were the filters clean? If so I'd think of mildew if door was closed
