Has anyone found a way of making socks white again? I swear DD goes out of her way to make them extra grubby! also why do schools insist on white socks? surely they know how grubby children can be!

Grey socks At dd & ds s school except at the junior scjo in summer term with summer dresses.

Try bleach?

My DCs are grown up now, but when they were little I drummed in an absolutely firm rule - no socks without shoes outside. Ever. if they took their shoes off outside, socks came off as well. That helped. Then there's Biotex soak powder - Asda do it but i dont think sainsburys do, for some reason. I routinely used to soak all the white socks in warm Biotex solution overnight before washing - had a bucket for it, the 'soak bucket'. Good for getting blood stains out too, including period accident knickers

No socks without shoes inside either! DH insists on buying himself white socks and wearing them with black shoes and trousers and so long as I don't wash them with any colours, they stay quite white, from time to time I add a scoop of the whitening Vanish stuff.

No school kids here but DH insists that white socks are comfier than socks in any other colour. DH is also a sweaty tradesman. I add a bit of borax to the drawer with my powder and wash on 60. They're never truly white again but meh, they're in his shoes.

School socks are always grey, it's the law.

3birthdaybunnies · 07/09/2013 11:18

We use navy socks - boys and girls - then you can't see the stains. Also taking socks off when take shoes off when I nag

Adikia · 07/09/2013 14:01

Thanks everyone, will grab some biotex when I go shopping and try that.

DD has to have white socks because its part of her uniform Sad shes good at keeping her shoes on outdoors but her school shoes are this style, with the open bit at the top so the top bit of her foot gets grubby.

I was about to ask this as ds has wrecked his new England football socks already. Don't think I can bleach them can I?

monikar · 07/09/2013 15:10

Have you tried Persil big box powder, the green bio one? I bought some when it was on offer and I am amazed at the difference in white things like towels and tea-towels, so it might help your socks.

2old2beamum · 07/09/2013 15:21

While we are about it why oh why do they make white vests? Surely navy/grey/ pink/purple ones are better I am quite happy to pay a bit more.

"Why do schools insist on white socks?"

I know! This is starting to do my head in. DD1 has just changed schools due to a house move. At her old school they could wear black, white or grey socks or black, grey, white or green (the school colour) tights.

At her new school they can only have white or grey. My child is the scruffiest child ever and cannot keep her things clean for one minute. Fine, I thought, I'll buy grey. I got grey tights but can I find any grey socks in her size? Can I bugger!

I'll be expecting to use a lot of bleach for her white socks!

Adikia · 07/09/2013 16:15

Thanks Moniker, shall grab some Persil as well, I generally just buy the one thats on offer as before DD started school I just avoided anything white because I'm too lazy for all this extra effort to keep things white

Robin, have you tried Asda? the one near me had loads of grey socks.

I will be so glad when her school go back into winter uniform and I can have nice maroon socks that don't show the dirt as much.

I got grey socks in Tesco before the summer and normally buy DDs grey school socks in marks.

Another one whose white socks are always grim so I only allow hits socks with summer dresses, then grey socks and tights for the winter.
