Best bed to buy for people prone to back pain

I've always assumed/been told/read that firmer mattresses were best for a bad back and put my aches and pains down to a previous back strain aggravated by aging but I recently had family to stay and ended up sleeping on the couch myself (we had that one unexpected tag along person) My tendancy to wake up stiff and aching was greatly reduced so I'm starting to wonder if I should replace our bed with something softer.

Has anyone found the same and managed to find a suitably comfortable mattress/bed combination ?

hi I can't really help but I would go in to a specialised bed shop somewhere highend - ish and ask there, I had a friend who worked in feather and black who was always happy to help add advise people, they usually have different types you can try out

I have degenerative disc disease and had three bulging discs last winter
I recently bought a new mattress from John Lewis, a firm one and it has made the world of difference.
I used to have to take painkillers half way through the night and haven't taken them since I got the new mattress.
But you can have a mattress that is too firm. Could you invest in a thick soft topper to soften your mattress a bit!
Also, the difference could be the pillows you use putting strain on your back that you don't even realise ?

Tempur memory foam is excellent imo.

Agree with TakingTheStairs although I have firm mattress
pillows really can make a difference - John Lewis for those too

Our bed is discontinued now but was made by Millbrooks worth taking a look at their site

it's a joke in our house that the most expensive item we have not seen by visitors but really worth every penny........well, actually all those pounds and it will last
