getting letters off a football shirt

Can someone please help me before my husband ruins my iron!

He is trying to remove the letters printed on the back of a football shirt. Any ideas?

Pick it off once you've washed it,one of those things I guess when you don't want it off it peels and when you do it stays put

Shove in tumble dryer....normally wrecks anything I've ever had with writing on it!
