Crispy shirts

My DH's shirts have got crispy bits on the underarm seam which doesn't go after washing.
Is there a way I can get rid or will he need new shirts?

I would try washing them with no detergent just a cup full of white wine vinegar (in the machine).

Would also use vinegar
