Its 5 years old, well used, started with not spinning and now just humming when I turn it on to start... is it ooomed? is it even worth trying to get it repaired (£45 for someone to fix plus parts if he can) or is it time for a new one? £££ gulp!! WWYD?

It might just need new brushes. Call out around here is £30 and I live in expensive area of South East.

I would give it one shot at being fixed before caving in and buying a new one.

I said I wouldn't fix my five year old washing machine next time it broke down. However I thought it might be something simple so called the local company who do repairs. It was going to be about £200 to fix, the repair man said that if I didn't fix it and bought a new one from the repair company (which is where I was going to buy it anyway) they wouldn't charge me for the call out. They'd just charge me the cost of the new machine and for that they'd include fitting it and taking away the old one so I went for that. I am a good customer of the local repair company!

New one, definitely.

What make is it?

It might just need new brushes as suggested above. Same thing happened to mine & that's what it was. My machine is a Siemens.

We called someone out & he changed the brushes, and also helpfully showed me what to buy & how to fit them myself if it happened again! It wasn't a terribly expensive repair if I remember correctly - much cheaper than a new machine.

If it's the brushes, it's dead easy and replacements only cost about £15 admittedly, I didn't actually change them
