Chemical-free way to get rid of flies?

There are half a dozen big black flies in my kitchen and they are making my skin crawl! Not sure where they've come from but suspect from the direction of the wheelie bin, which is due for collection in a couple of days (fortnightly collection). I can't get rid of them!

Every time I open the doors or windows then more seem to get in. I don't fancy spraying toxic fly-spray around my kitchen, and nor do I really want to hang up a bit of manky fly paper, so are there any other ways of getting rid of them??

I swat them with a tea towel when they land. It takes a bit of practice but I'm pretty nifty now Grin

My flip flop never fails. Whack!

Spider.

You need a really good fly swat. We got one with a long wire handle when we lived in the US (actually it was a joke leaving present to DH who complained about the horrible insects there) - it really does the job.

Venus fly traps. Genuinely.

A friend of mine has a novel method of keeping flies away. She half fills a small freezer bag with water and drops a shiny copper coin in then hangs it in her window. Don't know how it works, but she has no flies in her house.

ImNotBloody14 · 22/07/2013 17:45

Nicholas i saw that on fb. Apparently the tiny bubbles caused the copper in the water looks like lots of other insect eyes to the flies and scares them away as they could be predators. Not sure if its true.

Ive just found some citronella oil in the kitchen cupboard. Would that work if i put it in an oil burner?

I've resorted to colourful fly strips!

They don't look pretty but I'm so sick of the flies everywhere. Made worse by piss poor house design where there is nowhere outside for bins (even though there is a small garden) and it's black bag only (no wheelie bins).

I'm going to start hitting them soon too!

We've got a plastic bottle full of water and coppers in our kitchen window Nicholas. So far it seems to be working.

I'd welcome a spider to get rid of these little sh*ts, but haven't seen one for a few weeks.

Right, coppers in a bottle it is.

Glad to be of help beela, and thanks for your feedback ImNot and Sunshine. I'd use it too but I have big fuck off spiders keeping the flies down. When I say big I mean massive. You can almost hear the fuckers stomping across the room.
