Kitchen Compost Bin

MoottonBun · 18/07/2013 14:58

I usually put my green waste from the kitchen into a little bin first before transferring it to the garden compost bin, but the indoor bins I've had have all been useless - how do you handle your green waste indoors?

I am just getting rid of this one because it's gone all rusty and anyway I could never get the inner plastic bit to come out anyway so it was always a pain.
I used to have a ceramic version, but it cracked and the handle kept falling off.

Looking for a new one but would love to know what others do!

I just use a plastic tub with handle and lid. There's no internal liner, I just wash it out.

we have one similar to this from the council as they collect food waste

We got a council-issue miniature of the outside bin when the big caddy was delivered. It isn't pretty but it does have a decent capacity and is easily cleaned. I swill it out with v dilute bleach once a week.

We got a caddy from the Council, and whilst it was fine, it is not pretty, so I got one in Homebase very like the Garden Tradiing one.

I use it with compostable bags - none of them fit, and they hang over the edge which looks messy. The plastic inner bin is really difficult to take out, and the handle comes off every time I try to pull it out. Also it is not very big.

It looks nice but is a pain in the arse. My DH is constantly winding me up about the crappiness of it as I always buy things like this for how they look not how well they work. (Don't even get me started on our kitchen rubbish bin). I think I will go back to the Council one!

We have this one from Lakeland.
It is quite pricey (though was cheaper when we got ours) but if fits neatly on the worktop in the kitchen and imo looks better than the plastic brown one the council gave us. It has filters which you change but if I'm honest I don't remember the last time I changed it and it doesn't smell at all.
When it's full it gets transferred to the larger bin from the council which lives outside.

we use a plastic one from Sainsburys (think it was under £5), no liners, just wash it out each time. Had it 2 years and doesnt show any signs of breaking.

We have one from John Lewis which looks like an old fashioned metal bin, but in cream. They had similar in next recently. We use comparable bags to line it and put a piece of kitchen towel in the bottom. We've had it nearly a year and its not rusty yet. It was about £10.

ALDI do a metal one a couple of times year, rather like the John Lewis, but cheaper. Sign up for the emails and you'll find out when they're on offer.

I line inside of mine with a sheet of old newspaper, saves having to scrub it for ages!
