Laundry never retains its fresh smell.

I don't overload the machine.
I use Aeriel on whites.
I've run a 90 degree wash when machine's empty.
I use the extra rinse function.
I use Lenor fabric conditioner.
I line dry it.
They STILL don't smell freshly washed when they're dry. They don't smell bad or fousty (sp) but what's going wrong?

My friend's laundry always use to smell nice and fresh (Persil/Comfort) and I started using the same stuff as I thought my laundry had no smell. Didn't notice any difference and went back to buying whatever was on offer.
Once DS1s girlfriend picked up some of my clean laundry and said 'Mmm it smells of xxx (son's name)'. I couldn't smell anything.

So perhaps like me you've got used to the smell.

could it be cool washes which are not as effective as hot? Presume you are using powder not liquid (same) and correct amounts?

As you're line drying it, should be pretty good, provided it is then stored in a dry place. Indoor drying is bad for freshness but you don't do that.

maybe DS1 smells very "manly?"

It could be I'm used to the smell. I've tried all sorts of liquids, powders, tablets, gels though. I always wash everything at 40 or higher, so I don't think temperature's an issue.
If it's not on the line, I tumble dry it. It smells nice when it's wet, but when it's dry just smells meh.

powders usually contain a bleaching agent, unless they are marked "for colours." Liquids don't. might help.
