Help! Iron drops emptied (by 2 year old) all over carpet - how do I get it out?

The title says it all really.
I was woken up by 2 yr old DD at 5.30 this morning informing me she needed a clean nappy and had "made a mess". Somehow she managed to reach the iron drops that I give to the younger one and she had managed to take off the lid and has gleefully shaken it all over the carpet upstairs...

The carpet is now covered in black stains. I've tried rinsing with (lots of) clean water and it's helped a very little bit but there's still a lot of black.

I have done lots of google searching too but nowhere have I found anything suggested for iron stains (not rust). Does anyone here have any useful suggestions? Will we ever be able to get the black iron stains out or is it a new carpet job (we rent)?

Thanks in advance

GC

I'd suggest the next stage is trying rubbing gently with a weak solution of detergent ( either liquid washing machine stuff or even washing up liquid). Then blot by making a pad of kitchen paper, placing on top of stain and standing on it. Do you have a steam mop? if so you could try going over it with that and then blotting with kitchen paper as before. What colour is the carpet? Is it wool or synthetic. You can usually be tougher on synthetics than wool - I had one once that would even take bleach!
